Theoheat Design Specifications

At Theoheat we recognise that different projects require different levels of system optimisation.

Some developers prioritise cost efficiency, many installers want a well-balanced high-quality system, and specialist heating engineers may require advanced system optimisation designed to operate open loop.

Rather than forcing every project into the same specification, Theoheat provides three levels of system design, allowing each project to be tailored to the level of performance and optimisation required.

This approach ensures every installation achieves the right balance of cost, performance and long-term efficiency.

Essential

Reliable entry-level system specification

Essential Design provides a cost-conscious starting point for projects where budget is the primary consideration.

The system remains fully compliant and dependable while keeping material and installation costs under control.

Typical applications include:

  • Developer Projects
  • Large Housing Schemes
  • Budget-sensitive installations

Simplified controls where appropriate.

Premium

Our recommended system specification

Theoheat Premium Design is our most commonly specified system design, providing the best balance of performance, efficiency and installation practicality.

This specification has been developed to deliver reliable heating performance while ensuring the system remains well suited to both modern boilers and heat pump installations.

Key design features include:

  • Shorter loop lengths
  • Closer pipe spacings optimised for heat pump performance
  • Reliable operation with both boilers and heat pumps
  • Strong long-term system performance

For the majority of residential projects, Theoheat Premium Design represents the recommended specification.

Open Loop

Advanced system optimisation for heat pump installations

Theoheat OpenLoop Design represents the highest level of system optimisation offered by Theoheat.

These systems are designed specifically for high-performance heating installations where the objective is to maximise heat pump efficiency and seasonal performance (SCOP).

Rather than relying on multiple mixing controls and flow restriction, OpenLoop systems are designed so the underfloor heating circuits themselves provide the correct hydraulic balance.

This is achieved through careful system design including:

  • Room-by-room flow rate optimisation
  • Pipe spacing matched to heat demand
  • Precisely balanced circuit lengths

The result is a system capable of operating open loop directly from the heat pump, improving system efficiency while simplifying overall system hydraulics.
OpenLoop Design is particularly suited to:

  • Heat pump installations
  • High-efficiency new builds
  • Low-temperature heating systems
  • Heating engineers seeking maximum system optimisation

Please note: Full heat loss calculations must be submitted to us for open loop designs.

Why Theoheat Uses This Approach

By offering three levels of system design, Theoheat allows installers, developers and heating engineers to select the level of system optimisation that best suits their project.

This ensures every system is designed to deliver reliable heating performance while aligning with the priorities of the project, whether those priorities are cost control, balanced performance, or maximum heat pump efficiency.

What Influences Comfort and Performance?

Pipe density & heat distribution

Pipe spacing affects how evenly heat spreads through the floor and how stable the comfort feels.

Zoning & control strategy
Zoning determines how independently areas can be controlled and how easily the system can be optimised later.
Response characteristics
Floor build-up and system configuration influence how quickly rooms warm up and stabilise.
Floor temperature monitoring
Useful in selected areas (often bathrooms / sensitive finishes) for comfort refinement.
Heat source compatibility
Boiler and heat pump designs can differ. We design accordingly to keep performance predictable.

Detail In Digital Format

When purchasing an underfloor heating system from Theoheat.co.uk, we will provide you with a professional set of CAD designs for your project free of charge.

The designs consist of a complete set of plans for the installation of your system, no matter how simple or complex it might be. We design in a pragmatic and cost-effective way, providing you with the best layout solutions. With our designs, we include calculations of flow rates, volumes of water usage, heat loss and heat outputs, which if this is a new build project, may be needed for SAPS calculations, building regulations and Code for Sustainable Homes regulations.

Alternatively, our professional CAD technicians can provide you with a design only service.
